I see many stories doing the rounds about UK  replacing GB  on numberplates (and the oval plates) so here is the official statement – GOV.UK on Numberplates.

Put simply, lots of options to decorate your number plate if staying in the UK but only the UK with union flag on a blue of green background has any standing if going to EU countries and the oval plate is still required if going further abroad.
